Amsterdam Canal Houses

Early morning in Amsterdam, and the city is as quiet as it gets. Walking along a narrow street, I stopped at these Amsterdam canal houses mirrored in the water. Their tall facades, gables and windows form one pattern above the canal and another beneath it.

ic: Narrow Amsterdam canal houses and their reflections create a nearly symmetrical black and white view.

My Dutch wall art collection includes more photographs of the buildings, waterways and everyday places that caught my attention in the Netherlands.

Black and white keeps the photograph focused on form and tone. The reflected buildings are clear enough to feel substantial, but the water still separates them from the street above. I like that small uncertainty in an otherwise orderly composition.

A moment like this is one reason I enjoy walking with a camera. There is no need to add much to the scene; the relationship between the houses and the water already gives it structure. My photographs of the Netherlands show more of the places around this quieter Amsterdam view.

If you are planning a visit, I have also written about the best time to travel to Amsterdam. For photographs built around water and repeated shapes, see my reflection wall art collection.
