Pictures of cypress trees
Pictures of cypress trees from Caddo Lake Texas
These pictures of cypress trees show two sides of Caddo Lake: a dense grove in black and white, and a broad trunk surrounded by autumn colour. What holds my attention in both is the relationship between the trees and the water. The reflections extend the forest below the surface, making an already tangled scene more complicated.
In the first photograph, I see a forest of vertical lines interrupted by hanging branches and moss. There is no single tree that needs to carry the picture. The interest comes from the pattern across the frame, and from the small breaks that let the eye move into the grove.
My Cypress Tree Wall Art collection brings together photographs of these trees in different light and seasons. I like comparing the quieter black-and-white views with the colour that appears in autumn.
Cypress trees, shallow water, and autumn reflections
Caddo Lake straddles Texas and Louisiana. Its shallow water and bayous support bald cypress trees, with widened trunks and root projections commonly called knees. Texas Parks and Wildlife’s guide to the park’s nature is a useful introduction to the habitat around the lake.
The second photograph has a more definite starting point: the large trunk near the front. Beyond it, slender trees and their reflections repeat into the background. Keeping the colour makes those layers feel different from the dense monochrome grove above.
For more photographs from the season, see Caddo Lake fall colors. My article on cypress trees in the fall gives a broader view of photographing these landscapes.
If it is the meeting of land, trees, and water that interests you, my Wetlands Photography collection offers more photographs to spend time with.
